About the Unicode Escaper
This Unicode escaper runs entirely in your browser. Paste any text into the input box and click Escape to convert non-ASCII and control characters into \uXXXX escape sequences. Click Unescape to convert \uXXXX sequences back into readable text. Nothing is uploaded — all processing happens locally with JavaScript on your device.
What is a Unicode escape sequence?
In JavaScript, Java, and many other languages, characters outside the printable ASCII range can be written as \u followed by a four-digit hexadecimal code point. For example, the letter A is \u0041, the Euro sign € is \u20ac, and the Chinese character 中 is \u4e2d. This tool automates the conversion in both directions.
How to use the converter
- Paste or type your text into the input box.
- Click Escape to convert non-ASCII and control characters to
\uXXXXsequences. - Click Unescape to reverse the process — turning
\uXXXXsequences back into characters. - Click Copy output to copy the result, or Clear to start over.
Frequently asked questions
Which characters get escaped? Characters with a char code above 127 (non-ASCII) or below 32 (control characters) are escaped. Printable ASCII letters, digits, and common symbols are left untouched for readability.
Does it handle emoji and other astral-plane characters? Yes. Characters outside the Basic Multilingual Plane (above U+FFFF) are encoded as surrogate pairs (two \uXXXX sequences), which is valid JavaScript escape syntax and round-trips correctly through Unescape.
Does this tool upload my text? No. All conversion happens locally in your browser. Your text never leaves your device.
Is there a length limit? The only limit is your browser's available memory. Very large inputs convert instantly.
